Buregah: The Living Ocean
At sunrise, the waves rolled gently onto the shore, carrying stories older than memory. The Bundjalung people call the ocean Buregah, a word that speaks of more than just water. Buregah is life, connection, and Country.
For countless generations, the Bundjalung people have cared for Buregah. It provides fish, shellfish, and medicines, while its tides teach patience, respect, and the changing seasons. Children learn from their Elders to take only what is needed and to give thanks, ensuring that Buregah remains healthy for those yet to come.
As the sea breeze whispers across the sand, it reminds everyone that people and nature belong together. Looking after Buregah means looking after the animals, the plants, the beaches, and each other.
Today, Buregah continues to inspire the Bundjalung people to care for Country with wisdom, respect, and responsibility. The ocean is not simply a place to visit—it is a living part of culture, identity, and community, carrying the voices of the past into the future.
